What’s an Open Day for? While Oxbridge
streets indeed have the wow factor, it’s worth remembering that you are not
just up on a sight-seeing trip. You’ve come to suss out your course. Also, you may be allocated a college
other than the stunning one you picked. So, focus on events indoors.
At any university or college event
there will be someone who can add to your knowledge base. If you have settled
on a course, ask about books that will move you on. A tutor may have favourites
not on the reading list. Is there an accessible journal or feature article on
your special interest? Which museum or excavation site might be worth a holiday
visit?
Scouring the course website at home
may also have generated personal concerns:
will the course allow you to explore subject areas which interest you
but were not mentioned? Are there related ones? If the course doesn’t sound
right for you, which course might suit you better? Oxbridge students can be as
informative on this as dons.
There is lots more, fully up-to-date
advice in the latest, 2012 edition of OXBRIDGE ENTRANCE: THE REAL RULES (ISBN
978-09545944-66), available from July 13th. Order it from Amazon now.
