Here’s a final list of new, academically challenging exhibitions. More than of these may be just right for a student wanting to go out, yet needing to create an Oxbridge geared UCAS statement. Most exhibitions include subject-specific talks, and all will help to put your interests into a wider context. By writing about this, you can show that you are academically limbering up for your course.

SUPERHUMAN: THE TECHNIQUES OF HUMAN ENHANCEMENT
A Wellcome Trust exhibition on the (often medical) methods used in order to perfect our looks and body functions, and on the ethical dilemmas raised by some of them.

COMPTON, GUILDFORD (SURREY)
DICKENS AND THE ARTISTS
Looks at Dickens’ view of art and artists and the significant influence that his writings had upon the art of his age.

DURHAM
MADE IN CHINA
Explores relations between Britain and China between 1500 and the present day, drawing on the Chinese collections of Durham’s Oriental Museum and on local archaeological evidence.

BIRMINGHAM
PHARAOH, KING OF EGYPT
The lives of the ancient Egyptian kings, explored through over 130 British Museum objects not seen outside London before, from monumental sculptures to gold jewellery.

EXETER
INVISIBLE POWERS
Art works from 19th century Congo illustrate an exhibition exploring the religious beliefs of people  in pre-colonial Central Africa.

LONDON
BAUHAUS: ART AS LIFE
Explores the world’s most famous modern art and design school, which revolutionised architecture.
