GETTING A TASTE OF YOUR FUTURE DEGREE COURSE

Central Oxford

Still looking for your ideal course?  You’ll find Oxford taster events at http://www.pathways.ox.ac.uk/ and Cambridge tasters in the form of master classes at http://tinyurl.com/ntwzvlu. These are distinct from the Open Days run by both universities.

If you can’t attend the Oxbridge tasters either, don’t worry. A similar event elsewhere will still enable you to check whether a great-sounding degree subject may actually suit you. It will also, of course, help you draw up a good UCAS list. Nationwide taster events can be found at http://tinyurl.com/lekzhp3, and tasters held at universities within London are listed at http://www.london.ac.uk/tasters.

To really benefit from this kind of event it’s worth doing a bit of homework first. A taster may sound great, but it's a good idea to read the  chapter on course choice in OXBRIDGE ENTRANCE: THE REAL RULES before you book. Do also check out the full course description in the university prospectus. Still interested? If so, you'll find links to course-related news and features in my tweets @oxbridgentrance.

Once up, try and talk to current students about their experience. Is the course you’re aiming for as exciting as described? Student satisfaction tables found online can be misleading. If a taster was impressive enough to make you consider the university (or college) hosting it, don’t pay too much attention to the architecture of the place. Most students no longer notice the front of even the most palatial building a month into term  The same goes for the size of their room.
